ART, CV and Timeline
MULTIPLE MEDIUMS
Ollipekka Kangas (b. 1965) is a versatile Finnish artist and art educator from Turku, whose works reflect a deep connection to nature and its essential elements. The color blue is central to his art, which he employs to express themes of peace, silence, and the raw forces of nature. Kangas earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of Art and Design in 1999 and received his visual arts teacher qualification in 1996. Over his long career, he has created an extensive body of work encompassing paintings, photographs, video installations, and sculptures.
Abstract Expressionism and Experimental Techniques Kangas's paintings are often categorized within the style of Abstract Expressionism, emphasizing spontaneity and instinct. He strives to capture the emotions and sensations he experiences while moving through nature. His works are frequently layered, sometimes taking years to complete. He utilizes a diverse range of materials and techniques, including acrylic paints, iron powder, recycled materials, and even a heat gun.
In photography, Kangas is equally experimental, using long exposure times to create dreamlike and abstract images. He has developed his own specialized methods, including "Ultra slow photography" and the ICM method (Intentional Camera Movement). He has also explored the use of solarigraphy in his experimental photographic work. His "Slow Shutter" photographs were exhibited at the Photographic Centre Nykyaika in Tampere in 2020.
The color blue dominates Kangas's oeuvre. For him, it is a symbol of peace, tranquility, and natural elements such as water and the sky. He aims to capture the various nuances and profound depth of blue, often focusing on the meditative horizon as a key motif.
Kangas has held numerous solo and group exhibitions across Finland. His work has been displayed at venues such as the Turku Art Museum WAM, Galleria Berner, Photographic Centre Nykyaika, and Brinkhall Manor. He is also active on social media, sharing his work on Instagram at @opkangas.
Beyond his artistic practice, Kangas serves as a visual arts teacher at the University of Turku, where he shares his expertise and inspires emerging artists.
